Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The Grateful Dead Cosmo Quiz

If you’ve been hanging around here a while, you may have noticed that I ask a lot of trivia questions. I intend these for entertainment value only, without meaning to imply that one’s ability to answer them is any kind of measure of how devoted a Deadhead one is. But I started thinking the other day about a kind of Cosmo Quiz for Deadheads, with questions that more systematically test how much of the precious time we all have on this planet you’ve been spending obsessing about the boys.

Following is what I’ve come up with so far. By design, most of the questions reward knowledge of the group’s entire career. There are 111 possible points (if I count correctly).

I haven’t tested myself, because I figure it’s kind of unfair to do that with questions I thought of myself. But I know I wouldn’t get anything close to a perfect score, in part because I largely stop paying attention after 1978 or so. Also, the last two questions (totaling 26 points) are pretty tough I think to get perfect scores on.

I should admit I haven’t comprehensively road-tested the third question, so it’s possible that there is no correct answer for one or more years. And if there are two or more equally correct answers for any of the albums in the last two questions, any one of those would earn a point.

All questions are based on performances for which recordings have survived.

For all questions, songs have lyrics. So for the embedded songs questions, the song in the middle can’t just be a jam but must have lyrics, and both the first and last parts of the split song must have sung lyrics rather than just being a jam on the theme of that song.

I’m thinking 100 points or better would indicate an insanely comprehensive knowledge of Grateful Dead triviata, and anthing above 80 suggests you really should be spending more time with your loved ones and less time with the Grateful Dead. Give it a shot?

And if you have any ideas, I’d be very interested to hear suggestions for other questions worth including.

Grateful Dead Cosmo Quiz

RULES: From memory, with no use of databases and no consulting of CDs or any other sources of information until you've finished answering all questions.

1 point each: list 13 members of The Grateful Dead

1 point each: what 8 songs did they perform live the greatest number of times (8 guesses max)?

1 point each: for each year from 1967-1995, name a song first performed live in that year (one guess per year)

3 points each (1 point for each part of each answer): when, where, and how long (to within two minutes) were the longest live performances of Dark Star, The Other One, Playing in the Band, and In the Midnight Hour?

1 bonus point: which one of the above performances has not yet been commercially released?

1 point each: list five songs performed live by the Grateful Dead, with music credited solely to Phil Lesh

1 point each: list five songs performed live by the Grateful Dead, with music credited solely to Pigpen

1 point each: list up to 12 songs that were performed live with one or more other songs embedded in the middle (such as Not Fade Away > Going Down the Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away…but you can’t use that one)

1 point each: for each of the Grateful Dead’s 13 studio albums (including Anthem of the Sun), which was the first song performed live?

1 point each: for each studio album released by The Grateful Dead, which song was performed live the fewest times?

Is this a quiz, or learning objectives for a course description?

Gee, I'd answer them, but other people might cheat and look at my paper :-)

Anyway I know I've got at least 13. Can I get bonus points for making it 15, counting Otis and Dan Healy?

Whew, this'll separate the men from the boys. I probably couldn't answer a one of 'em, at least not with full credit (will you give any partial credit?) :)

Yes--one gets whatever points one earns, however incomplete any answer may be.

This actually made my day--kept the drool at bay (at least). I'm feeling too lazy, though, to look up every last answer. Any way you could post some in a separate thread with a big fat SPOILER ALERT in the subject line? It would be particularly helpful to have the answers to the final two questions. Thanks for it--I hope my score makes me feel "responsible."

Yes--I'll research those two probably over the weekend, and post answers to all but the 3rd and 8th, both of which are too open-ended for such a list. But one can check their answers to those through setlists or another database. Glad you like it!

"Anyway I know I've got at least 13"

How about 1 bonus point for knowing not to count Bruce.

I was wondering about Bruce - whether he counts or not, since he was supposedly just "sitting in." And what about Hunter? Healy? Bralove? I'd say limit it to musicians who perform onstage.

bruces record contract would not allow him to be an "official" member of the GD!

Is that why he turned down the offered "official" contract?

Does that eliminate Donna? Or did she shake a tambourine once upon a time?

If you limit it to people the band considered to have been part of the band, and who logically the band as we know it couldn't have existed without, you do get 13.

What about Ned? Do you count Hunter and Barlow both? This is too ambiguous.

Well, it's not my quiz -- it's Lou's -- so I don't know if it's "right." But I get 13, and yeah, I count Hunter and Barlow. Not Ned or Bruce.

Wow--if there's this much discussion of the first question, it's going to take us forever to do the whole quiz!

I said "13", not "all 13", so I don't mean to assume any authoritative stance as to who was and who wasn't. FWIW, I included Hunter because they did in the list of band members on American Beauty. As I said in my intro, I largely stop paying attention after 1978 or so, so I did include Bruce in my mental count, but perhaps naively. Personally, I wouldn't include Ned any more than I would Martin Fierro, but anyone who does clearly deserves the points if the quiz is intended to test how obsessed one is.

Geez, bluedevil, of course you count Donna. You can't knock off for quality, or you'd have to figure out which percentage of the time Bob messed up lyrics/played slide/sang in some ridiculous cheesy way, and knock that off, so that Bob would be, what, 87.5 percent of a band member?

Actually, applying that logic to everyone (individually and in tandem), I'm afraid we might have only, what, 80 percent of a band? 50 percent? Love 'em anyway. Donna too :-)
